What is the Alexa Rank?
Alexa Rank is a ranking system of Alexa.com(a subsidiary of Amazon.com) which is measured according to the number of visitors(with the Alexa toolbar installed) visited a websites.
Personally I(& many many more) don't think its' the perfect way to identified a websites rank, because it only counts those who visit your site and have already installed the Alexa toolbar. The data would be more accurate if it represent all the visitors(irrespective of Alexa toolbar installed) who have visited your website. But, it don't do that.
Alexa ranking works better for blogs(website) that have huge number of 'webmasters(bloggers) or matured web savvy' audience(because most of them likely have Alexa toolbar installed already) than websites whose visitors are unaware of Alexa toolbar.
Then, why we should take care of Alexa ranking
Though Alexa is not the perfect way to measure websites value(reach, traffic, potential), still it is in heavily used for calculating advertising cost(for an unknown reason) in your blog(website) by ad networks(like ReviewMe, TextLinkAds and SponsoredReviews) and other advertisers.
It's directly related with monetization purpose of website(mostly, if you are depending on link or site selling). If you have good Alexa rank then it means, you have good chance to earn more money from 'get paid to write review' techniques.
Techniques through which you can improve your Alexa rank of your blog or website
If you look for Alexa's top 500 website then you will see that those websites maintain their consistency & regularity. It means, if you want to improve your Alexa rank then you should update your blog regulary with good contents. Rather than this there are other steps you should perform to improve Alexa rank. Here we go.
(1) Claim your Blog(website) and Update Info at Alexa.com
Create an Alexa account(or use your present Facebook account) & claim your blog. In this claiming process you need to verify that you are the owner of that blog, you can do this by uploading a text file or placing a meta tag. Also don't forget to update blog's info through their 'self service tool', to provide your listing a professional touch.
(2) Review and Rating Techniques
Try to increase reviews and ratings for your Alexa website profile. One way to achieve this is to review & rate your fellow bloggers & asking them to review you back(then - why not start asking me?).
Also try to write review for alexa's top 5oo sites(find here - http://www.alexa.com/topsites), (as some says it may become helpfull). I am not sure will it work on not, but if you have some time then why not give it a try.
(3) Importance of Alexa toolbar
As you know, Alexa ranking is bascially depend on the number of visitors who have already installed the Alexa toolbar. So, its clear Alexa toolbar should be given supermost importance.
Download the Alexa toolbar and set your blog(for whom you want to improve the Alexa rank) as home page in computers(personal, office, cybercafe etc) and start using it in every possible moment. This step should be given most priority.
Encourage your visitors to use Alexa toolbar. Because, they are your visitors, means they may visit your blog & again & if they have Alexa toolbar installed while visiting your blog, your Alexa ranking wil limprove.
(4) Add Alexa Site Widget(Alexa Traffic Rank Button) in your Blog
Add a Site Widgets(Alexa Site Stats Button / Alexa Traffic Graph / Alexa Traffic Rank Button) in your blog. (According to some, each click on it counts as a visit even if the toolbar is not used by the visitor, I don'tknow if it is true or not, but after addition of Alexa Traffic Rank Button my blog's rank mprove).
If you don't want to use Alexa Site Widget on all of your page, then you should place it on the most popular(that receives traffic from the search engines) post.
(5) Write for Alexa in your Blog
Bloggers(& webmasters) are keenly interested to learn tips & tricks on how to improve Alexa rank. Try to provide your understanding & techniques on it.
If they like your posting, they may link back to you and may provide visitors with the alexa toolbar already installed.
You can create 'Alexa' as a category(to give it focus & make it easily accessible) & put all also related articles on it to catch webmasters(bloggers) attention. Also ask them to submit their positive testimonials, which can be helpfull.
(6) Adding a Webmaster Section in your Blog can be helpfull
Most of the webmasters will have the Alexa toolbar installed. If they visit your blog then your Alexa ranking will obviously be improved. Now, you have to do something in your blog so that webmasters love to visit your blog agian & again. For this, you can -
i) create a webmaster tool section
ii) publish blog posts(seo, smm etc) that can produce interest in webmasters
iii) leverage the power of webmaster forums
(7) Advertisement Technique(FREE and Paid)
More visits means more Alexa toolbar installed(possible) visitors & it means good Alexa rank. So,advertising should be given a chance(if you have money to do so). I would love to advertise through Google Adwords. But, peoples suggest to advertise on ExactSeek search directory, because its results are directly related with Alexa's ranking. If a website got highest rank at ExactSeek.com then there is a chance it has good Alexa rank as well.
Rather than this you should also focus on SEO(search engine optimization) through getting listed on as many search engines & directories as possible & SMM(social media marketting) through promoting your content on social networking websites(facebook etc), social bookmarking(digg, stumbleupon etc) and forums.
Survey suggest that Alexa toolbar is more famous in asian web users so try to advertise or promote your blog where they visit(possible? why not?)
(8) Alexa Re-Direction
I read in some blog that Alexa re-direction technique(usinge 'http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.yourblogname.com' instead of 'http://www.yourblogname.com') may improve rank. They have said to use this features whenever(in blog comments as well as forum signatures etc) possible.
Though, it isn't working now a days (Ha Ha Ha .....)
(9) Alexa Auto Surf
I don't know if they work on not as I didn't(& don't want to) try this. But services like http://www.surfsieve.com , http://www.upmyrank.com ,http://www.rankraise.com gurrenties that alexa auto surf will increase your Alexa rank.
Note: If you are using adsense then you should think twice before using this service, as it may violate Google terms. And one more thing, it can't be the long term solution to improve your Alexa rank(so why should use it?).
